The Office for Sustainability's Green Labs Program is conducting UVA's 2025 Shut the Sash competition from November 1st-November 30th. This friendly competition promotes safe, smart, and sustainable practices when using a fume hood.  

Who's eligible?
Any lab with a chemical fume hood is eligible to participate in the Shut the Sash 2025 Competition. After completing this signup form labs will receive their competition form on November 1st to complete throughout the month. 

 

During the month of November when your fume hood is not in use the sash should be closed or lowered to the lowest possible position. During the month of November, Green Lab Team members will be conducting a random audit on all fume hoods entered in the competition to ensure that when unused the sash is lowered. At the beginning of the month a Competition Form will be shared with every lab that participates. Labs that complete a certain number of tasks on the competition form and pass their audit will be entered in a raffle drawing for prizes. 

 

1. Fill out and submit the competition form by Sunday, November 30th at 5pm.
2. To qualify for winning the raffle drawing, your group must earn AT LEAST 15 points on this competition form. All qualifying labs will be entered into a raffle to win a prize, and a spotlight on the Sustainable UVA website & social media.
3. One winner from each of the following schools will be selected from a raffle drawing to win a lab donut/pizza party AND Green Lab Beaker mugs for all lab members. Winners will be announced and contacted Friday, December 12th.
