Study Title: First-Year Students’ Perception of Research, Protocol #: 3918
Please read this study information sheet carefully before you decide to participate in the study.
Purpose of the research study: The purpose of this study is to better understand how first-year students like yourself think about academic research and the university library.
What you will do in the study: You will take a short survey approximately one week before you participate in some kind of library instruction. Your survey answers will be collected and analyzed as part of the study. You do not have to complete the survey, and you can skip any question on the survey or stop at any time.
Time required: The study will require about 5 minutes of your time.
Risks: There are no anticipated risks in this study.
Benefits: There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this research study. The study may help us better understand first-year students when they first arrive at the university, so that we can tailor services, materials, and instruction to first-year students’ needs.
Confidentiality: The information that you give in the study will be handled confidentially. Your name and other information that could be used to identify you will not be collected or linked to the data. Because of the nature of the survey questions, it may be possible to deduce your identity from your answers; however, there will be no attempt to do so and your data will be reported in a way that will not identify you.
Voluntary participation: Your participation in the study is completely voluntary, and your decision to participate will have no effect on grades or school services.
Right to withdraw from the study: You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.
How to withdraw from the study: If you want to withdraw from the study, simply stop completing the survey and close your browser window. There is no penalty for withdrawing and withdrawing will not affect your grades or school services. Because the data are not connected to your identity, you cannot withdraw after you submit the survey.
Payment: You will receive no payment for participating in the study.
Using data beyond this study: The data you provide in this study will be retained in a secure manner by the researcher for 5 years and then destroyed.
