Hello! Would you share some of your writing with us?
I. What counts as writing?
- Anything that you have written down (on paper or a screen or whatever), putting ideas into a form we can see. Examples:
- lab reports
- math (esp. if you're trying to work out a big problem or idea)
- project proposals
- essays or articles or papers
- short stories or poems or plays (excerpts or abstracts are fine, too!)
- emails or text exchanges
- journal entries
- sketches (for class or for fun)
- surprise us
II. Who are we?
We are the members of ENWR 2520: "History and Culture of Writing at UVA," working in collaboration with UVA's Special Collections Library (the Albert and Shirley Small Collection). We're working to document writing activity at UVA today.
You can read more about our class here.
III. Why do we want your writing?
We find that when people think of "writing," they tend to have a pretty limited idea of what counts. This limitation is a problem for two reasons, because when people don't recognize that they are, in fact, writing, (1) they can't get or share the benefits of writing research, etc., and (2) their work becomes invisible, even though plenty of other people might want to see it.
We're trying to collect a WIDE range of writing, so we can show a more complete picture of what kinds of writing people are really doing at UVA.
Feel free to reach out with questions. You can ask the person who sent you this survey OR contact our professor, Heidi Nobles, at heidi.nobles@virginia.edu.
Thanks for considering!
