Having now finished the novel and your journaling exercises for the week, how would you describe your experiences with empathy throughout the reading process?
Reflecting on Wednesday's writing exercises: did you feel more or less empathy for the characters while *writing* them versus reading them? Could you explain?
How did your experiences with empathy and the novel change after reading more about the communities and issues the characters inhabited/faced?
As we've noted, consistent research has found that reading fiction in particular is linked with increased empathy (see the sources on our course website). After this week, what would you say to those researchers? Where did their results correspond to your experience, and where did your experience diverge? Do you have any speculations regarding the factors contributing to the divergences?
If a person, just on their own (not as part of a study), wanted to read fiction to build their own empathy, what would you recommend to them?
We've touched on a lot of sensitive issues in these first two units. Is there anything you'd like to say anonymously, either because you want the rest of us to consider something we may be missing or just because you want to express something?
